Coupled climate response to Atlantic Multidecadal Variability in a multi-model multi-resolution ensemble

چکیده

Abstract North Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs) underwent pronounced multidecadal variability during the twentieth and early twenty-first century. We examine impacts of this Multidecadal Variability (AMV), also referred to as Oscillation (AMO), on climate in an ensemble five coupled models at both low high spatial resolution. use a SST nudging scheme specified by Coupled Model Intercomparision Project’s Decadal Climate Prediction Project Component C (CMIP6 DCPP-C) impose persistent positive/negative phase AMV model simulations; SSTs are free evolve outside region. The large-scale seasonal mean response positive involves widespread warming over Eurasia Americas, with pattern cooling Pacific Ocean similar (PDO), together northward displacement inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ). accompanying changes global atmospheric circulation lead precipitation. Analysis Variance (ANOVA) demonstrate that is accompanied significant differences between how they respond common forcing, particularly tropics. These may arise from variations air-sea heat fluxes despite forcing pattern. cannot detect effect increased horizontal resolution response, exception ITCZ, which shifts further northwards higher configurations.

Predictability of North Atlantic Multidecadal Climate Variability

Atmospheric weather systems become unpredictable beyond a few weeks, but climate variations can be predictable over much longer periods because of the coupling of the ocean and atmosphere. With the use of a global coupled ocean-atmosphere model, it is shown that the North Atlantic may have climatic predictability on the order of a decade or longer. These results suggest that variations of the d...

A simple coupled model of tropical Atlantic decadal climate variability

[1] A linear, zonally averaged model of the interaction between the tropical Atlantic (TA) atmosphere and ocean is presented. A balance between evaporation and meridional heat advection in the mixed layer determines the sea surface temperature tendency. The atmosphere is a fixeddepth, sub-cloud layer in which the specific humidity anomaly is determined by a steady-state balance between evaporat...

Multidecadal climate variability in the Greenland Sea and surrounding regions: a coupled model simulation

Pronounced oscillations of ocean temperature and salinity occur in the Greenland Sea in a 2000 year integration of a coupled ocean-atmosphere model. The oscillations, involving both the surface and subsurface ocean layers, have a timescale of approximately 40-80 years, and are associated with fluctuations in the intensity of the East Greenland Current. The Greenland Sea temperature and salinity...

Evolution of the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability in a Model with an Improved North Atlantic Current

This article investigates the dynamics and temporal evolution of the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) in a coupled climate model. The model contains a correction to the North Atlantic flow field to improve the path of the North Atlantic Current, thereby alleviating the surface cold bias, a common problem with climate models, and offering a unique opportunity to study the AMV in a model. ...
